Alan Pardew comments on Connor Wickham’s proposed Crystal Palace switch

Sunderland’s Connor Wickham is close to joining Crystal Palace.

Speaking to reporters of the Mirror regarding Sunderland’s Connor Wickham, Crystal Palace boss Alan Pardew has conceded it’s a deal the club are actively looking to complete.

The English striker only signed a new four-and-a-half year deal with the Black Cats last December and played a key role in the club’s securing of Premier League survival in 2014/15.

However, the summer signing of Jeremain Lens has prompted plenty of speculation over Wickham’s Sunderland future, with interest from Palace revealed by HITC Sport on Thursday.

A fee ranging between £6-8 million, depending on which news outlet you read, is said to have been agreed and Palace boss Alan Pardew has admitted he is hopeful of concluding a deal.

"It's a deal that I hope we can do. The chairman has been magnificent in backing me this summer,” the former Newcastle United boss explained.

Summer deals:

The Eagles have been busy bolstering their squad this summer and have not been afraid to spend big in order to bring in their targets, such as Yohan Cabaye for a club record fee from Paris Saint-Germain.

Wickham’s potential arrival could see him join Patrick Bamford in a newly-formed Palace attack which also boasts players such as Glenn Murray, Dwight Gayle and Wilfried Zaha.

Wickham’s ability:

The 22-year-old may only have scored five goals last season, but his creativity was never questioned as he created 21 key chances for his teammates over the course of the campaign.

Plenty of questions will be asked on Sunderland’s part should they decide to cash in on the forward, especially considering his age and potential to play at the top level for many years to come.
