Stephen Warnock comments on starting in Derby's first game of the season

Derby County defender Stephen Warnock is determined to be ready for the club's first game of the new Championship season against Bolton.

Derby County defender Stephen Warnock told the club’s official website that he’s relaxed over his chances of starting the club’s first game of the Championship season against Bolton.

Warnock featured in an impressive draw for Derby in their friendly game against Villarreal earlier this week and has suggested that while manager Paul Clement mulls over who will start in the team for the Championship season, the players simply have to prepare for being ready.

“It’s up to the Head Coach, it’s his decision - Being ready for 8 August is the main thing for us. It’s nice to get a good result – one that we are disappointed that we didn’t go on to win – but the main focus is to be ready for the Bolton game,” he told

Clement will have a good idea of his team already

Paul Clement is not a naïve and inexperienced coach so he’s likely to already have a very good idea of the team he wants to take into the match against Bolton.

Whether players like Warnock feel they are in with a chance of starting or not, their mentality has to be exactly the same in the way they approach the game and the next week leading up to the match.

All they can do is keep their heads down, train hard and ensure that they give themselves the best possible chance of featuring on the opening day and then staying in the side once they have been given their opportunity.

Everyone needs to stay fit and mentally ready because even if players don’t start, the season is long and drawn out so there should be opportunities for all players in a very talented squad.
