A report claims that Tottenham wanted Ilicic this summer, but Fiorentina have hopes for the season.

A report on Fiorentina.it has claimed today that La Viola have rejected a bid this summer for Slovenian attacking midfielder Josip Ilicic from Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur.

Leeds United were linked with the player last season, when he was out of form at the Serie A side, but he performed much better in the latter stages of last season which caught the attention of other clubs.

Tottenham were believed to be one of them.

It was reported earlier this month by Florence-based paper La Nazione that Tottenham were eyeing up a £5.5 million bid for the player.

The same report is now claiming that Tottenham and Bologna both had bids for the player rejected by Fiorentina this summer.

La Viola are now said to be hoping to get the best out of Ilicic this season after a more promising end to last term in Florence.

Did Spurs need him?

No.

In signing Ilicic Tottenham would just be bringing in yet another attacking midfielder who cannot really pull off the job out wide.

Erik Lamela, Nacer Chadli and Christian Eriksen are all players with this similar problem and Tottenham would be better off spending their £5.5 million on someone else – that is, if they ever did make a move for Ilicic.
