According to the Daily Mail, Aston Villa have made an approach to West Bromwich Albion to sign Joleon Lescott, with an offer of £1million for the former England defender understood to have been discussed.
The centre-half, who soon turns 33, was targeted by Villa last summer but they were not prepared to pay his reported 50k-a-week wages.
However with Nathan Baker generating exit talk and Ron Vlaar no longer at the club, manager Tim Sherwood is looking for a suitable first-team replacement and is able to offer higher salaries to transfer targets this season.
Despite the club's approach, Tony Pulis' Albion have rebuffed their local rival's interest in the Englishman's services.
He may only have a year left on his current deal at the Hawthorns, but the suggested fee will be considered an insult by the club's fans.
He would undoubtedly fill the void left by the departed Vlaar, not only because of his experience and ability to lead, but he is also a better defender than the Dutch international.
|Stats per Game||Team||Tackles Won||Tackle Success (%)||Clearances Made||Interceptions Made||Aerial Duels Won||Aerial Success (%)||Passes||Pass Accuracy (%)||Appearances|
|Joleon Lescott||West Brom||1.35||81||5.91||2.15||2.12||61.02||31.12||77||34|
|Ron Vlaar||Aston Villa||0.55||65||5.75||2.05||1.2||52.17||31.5||82||20|
As the statistics show, Lescott not only won more tackles last term, he also won more aerial duels, made a greater number of interceptions and clearances per appearance.
In fact, his passing ability is the only area he is bettered the former Villa captain.
