Selley suggested that a victory in the Community Shield game against Chelsea this weekend would have a positive impact for the Gunners looking ahead to the new campaign, with an early chance to get one over on one of the club’s main rivals.
“I think this will carry over into the season. I think if they were to get a result Arsenal then it sets them up for the first fixture and they can send a message – The test is whether they can take points off of the top teams,” he told talkSPORT.
Evidence Arsenal can use from the past
Arsenal showed last season that they are more than comfortable of playing well against their direct rivals.
In the match away at Manchester City, they produced a superb performance to secure a victory and they battered Manchester United in the match at the Emirates, although the Old Trafford side were deadlier in terms of taking their chances.
The issue for Arsenal is two-fold; they need to be more precise and lethal when they get chances against their rivals and they need to be consistent in terms of positive results against them.
Will Arsenal win against Chelsea this weekend?
The Gunners have been in very good form through pre-season so far and it will be interesting to see how Chelsea cope, if Arsenal put together some early pressure.
The side’s pace and creativity in wide and central areas may be a little too much for the Blues to be able to cope with.
