Manchester United transfer news: Van Gaal gives up hope of Ronaldo coup; De Gea latest

A select round-up of the latest news relating to Manchester United

According to a report from the Sun, Manchester United have given up hope of pulling off a surprising transfer coup by bringing Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford.

Louis van Gaal’s side were said to be willing to pay £60million for the Portuguese international but Real are said to want £85million for the superstar.

There is no doubt a Ronaldo return would instantly turn United into title favourites given the 30-year-old’s undisputed talent, but it was always going to be unlikely that they could tempt him back to England at this stage of his career.

In other news, the Independent reports that Real Madrid will now continue their pursuit of United goalkeeper David de Gea after seemingly fending off van Gaal’s interest in Sergio Ramos.

In truth this story makes little sense, considering United were apparently only willing to do business if the Spanish international centre-back was included as part of the deal to take the ‘keeper to the Bernabeu.

But with contract talks now said to be imminent for Ramos at Real, it remains to be seen how United will deal with the De Gea situation given that he only has a year left on his deal.
