Derby County manager Paul Clement has explained on the club’s official website that there is still time for any player to influence his team selection ahead of the first game of the new Championship season against Bolton.
Derby have one friendly game left to play before the domestic action returns and Clement has explained that there is time in that match and in training sessions for any player to work hard and to catch his eye.
“We have another friendly against Burton and other training sessions to look at the players,” he told dcfc.co.uk.
“There’s still time for players to put their mark down to start the first game and there will be some difficult decisions to make, but it’s healthy for the squad.”
Clement will already have an idea of his best side
Despite Clement’s comments, somewhere in his office at the club, he will have a list of players he’s working on to start the game against Bolton.
It would be worrying if by this stage of pre-season, the boss didn’t have an idea of what his best side is based on the squad his assembled over the past few weeks.
What’s important is that he’s made some common sense comments in terms of a way to keep his players motivated.
He’s trying to keep everyone on their toes, which should help the boss to prevent any signs of complacency from creeping into the mentality of his key men.
What’s important is that he resists the urge to make too many changes because consistency in team selection is important and vital to the club getting off to a good start.
