Celtic will take a 1-0 lead into the second leg of their latest Champions League qualifying game against Qarabag following a single goal from defender Dedryck Boyata, which gives the Bhoys a slender advantage.
Celtic were cautious in their game last night, careful not to give anything away as they continue their pursuit of a position in the Champions League group stage, which is important for the club for a number of reasons.
There will be two main factors about the performance which please Celtic manager Ronny Deila. Firstly, he’ll be happy that the club managed to keep a clean sheet and secondly, he’ll be pleased that Boyata has managed to maintain an impressive start to his career with the club.
He’s settled into life at Parkhead quickly and is showing no signs of being intimidated by the size and pressure of the club, which allows him to go into matches with a carefree attitude, which allows him to take a few more risks.
Boyata has settled into the Celtic defence quickly and easily, which bodes well for the start of the domestic season and the later stages of the Champions League, if the Bhoys can ensure that they qualify.
Playing in the Champions League will definitely be one of his main aims because it’s a platform, which will allow him to develop his game further by being subjected to an elite level of football where the standard tends to be higher than what Boyata will experience every week in the Scottish Premiership.
If he can embrace that challenge and marry it with some good form in the league or in one of the domestic Scottish Cup competitions, he’s sure to have a very good year as a Celtic player.
Here’s what Celtic fans had to say about Boyata’s performance last night.
Goals scoring defenders ... Never get tired of that #Boyata— Lisa Sloan (@ailidhsmum) July 29, 2015
Dedryck Boyata's 2 goals so far for Celtic probably justify his entire transfer fee, given their context— Narey's Toepoker (@Nareystoepoker) July 29, 2015
