Burnley hoping to pip Preston in pursuit of want-away Chesterfield defender Tendari Darikwa

HITC Sport understands that Championship interest is mounting in a player who has handed in a transfer request.

HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club that Burnley have joined the chase for Chesterfield defender Tendari Darikwa.

It has been widely reported, by the likes of Sky Sports, that the highly-rated defender has handed in a transfer request at his League One employers.

He has turned down the offer of a new contract with the Spireites and is eager to test himself at a higher level.

There is plenty of Championship interest in the 23-year-old full-back, who is a product of Chesterfield’s academy system and their reigning Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year.

Preston North End, a side preparing for life back in the second tier, have been leading the chase for Darikwa, with the Sky Sports report carrying quotes from Simon Grayson in which he admits to being an admirer.

Burnley are, however, looking to pip their rivals to the signature of a top Football League talent, with Sean Dyche in the process of piecing together a squad that he hopes will bounce back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.
