Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has said that Jordon Ibe is a player who can excite the club's supporters, but added a note of caution surrounding the 19-year-old's development.
In an interview with the club's official television channel, Rodgers was singing in the praises of the winger who returned from a loan spell with Derby County halfway through last season, and impressed against several sides during the second half of the season in several positions.
Rodgers said: "We mustn't forget he's still only 19. He broke into the team young and had some appearances. We felt he needed a loan, has gone out and did really well.
"Then when he came back last season he was exceptional in his performances. I think he really excites the supporters.
"He's definitely a player that we want to really create into a top-class performer, but we've got to give him that time and we're creating the environment for him to do that."
There is plenty of competition for a place in the side, with Ibe up against the likes of Lazar Markovic, and new signing Roberto Firmino - while he may also be facing competition from last season's star man Philippe Coutinho for a place in the starting XI - depending on what system Rodgers wants to play.
The competition will probably be help for Ibe given there is likely to be less pressure on his shoulders to perform at the top of his game week in, week out, but he will get opportunities to shine - especially given the Reds' participation in the Europa League this season.
Ibe has shone during pre-season, which has featured a wonderfully taken goal against Malaysia and he will be looking to carry that form into the new season. Certainly, he is a player that can terrorise defences when he gets on a run and has pace to burn but like all players, there is a long way for him to go yet.
