Aston Villa media round-up: Gestede deal edges closer, Baker set for exit

A selection of stories in the media involving Aston Villa over the past 24 hours.

Negotiations for the transfer of Rudy Gestede have advanced and the Blackburn striker is now in talks with Villa after the clubs agreed a fee, according to the Lancashire Telegraph.

The 26-year old enjoyed a prolific year in the Championship last season - scoring 22 goals - and now looks set to be Villa’s eight summer signing.

Another player who looks close to joining the Villain’s ranks is French midfielder Jordan Veretout, and Nantes president Waldemar Kita has confirmed that he accepted Villa’s bid despite Leicester City offering more.

“I’m set to lose €5m (by taking Villa’s deal and not Leicester’s). I am a pillock. I would have never thought I would have done anything other than try to raise the price, but I am not going to go against the boy,” he told L’Equipe, as reported by Get France Football.

Villa's foray into the French market continues with their interest in Marseille winger Florian Thauvin but the player has snubbed their advances, according to French outlet RMC Sport.

Newcastle have also seen a £12 million bid for the player rejected but it is believed he would be opposed to a Villa switch even if the two clubs could agree on a fee.

Meanwhile, Nathan Baker is closing in on a move to the Championship with Burnley, as reported by the Lancashire Telegraph.

The Clarets are said to be close to agreeing a £2 million fee for the 24-year old central defender who made just 13 appearances for Villa last season.
