Arsene Wenger has dropped a hint on the club’s official website as to why he won’t be looking to sign a new centre back before the close of the transfer window.
Wenger ruled out youngster Calum Chambers leaving the football club, suggesting that he wants focus on developing the former Saints man into a centre back.
Wenger has confirmed that Southampton were keen on a move to take Chambers back to St Mary’s but the Arsenal boss suggested that he’s got big things in store for the player.
“They [Southampton] didn’t try to get him back on loan and I will not consider it. Not at the moment,” Wenger told arsenal.com.
“I want to develop [Chambers] as a centre back and at the moment we have just the right number. He will get games here.”
The important factor for Wenger over Chambers
The thing Wenger arguably needs to bear in mind when using Chambers over the course of the next season is to give him the chance to settle in a key role.
He’s still a very young man trying to make his way at one of the biggest clubs in Europe and while he’s got off to a good start in Arsenal colours, it’s important he can focus on playing a key role for the club.
It’s difficult for even the most experienced players to have to constantly adapt and change to different roles and positions, because they never get a chance to fully master a specific job in their area of the team.
However, Chambers can do himself no harm at all by going about any position he’s asked to play in a professional manner. He’ll just be hoping he has a chance to make a role his own.
