Crespo has been confirmed as the club’s latest signing, as Sherwood continues to improve his squad ahead of the new Premier League season.
The boss has given his initial thoughts on the new arrival, explaining that he gets the sense the player is very keen to get his teeth into a career at Villa Park as quickly as possible.
“Jose is a player who has been on our radar for some time and we're really pleased to secure his signature,” he told avfc.co.uk.
“He is an experienced player who has played in La Liga and Serie A, two of the strongest leagues in Europe, and from speaking to him I know he can't wait to play for Aston Villa.”
Defensive options continue to improve
Sherwood made a positive signing in the form of defender Micah Richards and the arrival of Crespo shows a real desire for that area of the squad to become stronger.
One area of the team which really struggled at times last season was the defence, with Sherwood forced to use different options and players out of position, which created cracks that the opposition were able to exploit.
The aim over the next few months will be to develop a balanced back four, which can stay together and remain consistent when put under real pressure by their opposition.
It’s always going to be difficult for any defence to gel and develop bonds between players when the shape and identity of the back four is constantly changing.
