Report: Alan Pardew wants former player Jose Fonte to leave Southampton for Crystal Palace

Alan Pardew

The Crystal Palace boss wants to be reunited with the Portuguese international at Selhurst Park.

It is reported by ESPN that Crystal Palace are looking at bringing in former player Jose Fonte from Southampton this summer to strengthen their defensive options for the 2015-16 campaign.

It is believed that Palace’s last remaining transfer aim for the summer is to snap up a defender with the Portuguese international seemingly at the head of that shortlist.

Fonte headed over to English football from Benfica in 2007 to join Palace on loan. After three years with The Eagles he left for Southampton, where he is now captain.

Alan Pardew, current Palace manager, was the man who snapped up Fonte for Southampton when they were in League One and Fonte has gone on to make over 200 appearances for The Saints in the last five years.

Is a deal likely?

Hardly.

Firstly, Southampton are already short of defenders. Florin Gardos is out of action for six to seven months and the Ronald Koeman missed out on former loanee Toby Alderweireld, who decided to join Tottenham Hotspur instead.

Then there is the position he currently holds at Southampton. He is revered at the club and is set to lead them into Europe this season.

A move to Palace now would seem highly unlikely.
