The Tottenham Hotspur defender is something of an unknown quantity for his soon-to-be coach in Italy.
Napoli coach Maurizio Sarri has admitted he has only watched Vlad Chiriches play for 45 minutes as the Tottenham Hotspur defender closes in on a move to Italy.
As reported by Sky Sports, the Romanian international arrived in Italy on Tuesday night ahead of his medical and while the deal is yet to be formally announced it seems only a matter of time.
But now Football Italia has published comments that Sarri gave during an interview with reporters, during which he admitted that he really did not know all that much about the imminent addition to his squad.
“I don’t know much about him,” Sarri told a press conference in reference to Chiriches. “I saw him for half of a match, and he seemed to have discrete physical qualities, but I don’t have a clear impression.
“But if they (Napoli) chose him…”
In short, the Italian club’s hierarchy appear to have opted for the move and it will soon be up to Sarri to get the best out of a player who has had a disappointing spell at Tottenham.
The centre-back arrived at Spurs back in 2013 but, after making 17 Premier League appearances in his debut campaign and 24 in all competitions, he managed just 10 league matches last season and a surge of defensive reinforcements always suggested his time at White Hart Lane was coming to an end.
The majority of Tottenham fans are likely to feel that Chiriches is a player they are better off without, especially when you consider they now have Kevin Wimmer and Toby Alderweireld among others, but Sarri is about to watch him for far longer than 45 minutes, and one wonders how long it will take him to decide if he is happy with his imminent addition.
