The Jamaica skipper was released by Leeds this summer but has reportedly had a move to Sheffield Wednesday blocked by the FA.
Indeed, Austin has apparently been denied a work permit, which has scuppered any potential Wednesday deal - a side he enjoyed one of his better games against during last season's Champioship.
Meanwhile, the 30-year-old has also declared that he should have left Leeds in January, according to quotes carried by the Yorkshire Evening Post.
As such, the bizarre state of affairs has prompted plenty of fan reaction on Twitter from both the Leeds and Sheffield Wednesday faithfuls.
There was a mixed response from Whites supporters...
Austin's son was born here but he can't get a work permit? Bit harsh. He should be made an honorary citizen for "Services to Row Z". #lufc— White Answers (@whiteanswers) July 29, 2015
Feel sorry for Rodolph Austin. Brilliant attitude and a better player than many give him credit for. Now the FA won't let him play #lufc— Ryan Merrifield ✌️ (@Ryan_Merri) July 29, 2015
So...Austin can't get a work permit? Many where saying that was the reason at the time of his release, much easier to blame MC though #lufc— The Original Deputy (@OriginalDeputy) July 29, 2015
Sheffield Wednesday fans, meanwhile, have expressed their frustration at the FA's ruling, with many slamming those who criticise Austin.
The former Leeds midfielder would add plenty to the Wednesday midfield, argue several supporters on social media, who are subsequently disappointed to have missed out on the 30-year-old.
Austin enjoyed a strong Gold Cup this summer as Jamaica reached the final of the tournament, although a reckless display almost got the Sheffield Wednesday target sent off in the final against Mexico.
Here's how fans of the club that wanted him reacted to the bizarre news on Twitter:
Can't believe the FA have blocked a move for Austin #swfc— Pretty Visitors (@AGlasby_) July 29, 2015
Why would #swfc fans not want Austin. He can shoot, pass, defend and attack. Better than Semedo imo.— 2015/16 Champions (@__AtdheBaby__) July 29, 2015
Fans saying they wouldn't want Rudy Austin are thick. Those same fans probably want Nuhiu as first choice striker next year... #swfc— Joe Bommino (@Bommino_) July 29, 2015
