The dust has settled on the defender’s move to the club after he decided to part ways with former team Burnley, following their relegation from the Premier League last season.
Clement has explained that he feels Shackell adds real strength on one side of the club’s centre-half pairing while bring plenty to the table in terms of his core experience.
“Jason is a player that has played here before, a favourite with the supporters - Jason is an experienced player, and we can only benefit from that,” Clement told the Derby Telegraph.
“He is a strong centre-half, left-sided – and there are not many of those around – he has experience of this league and of the Premier League and he is at a good age as well.”
Where Shackell’s experience will help
Shackell’s experience will help him on an individual and team scale.
As an individual, he won’t need any settling in period because he already knows what the division is about in terms of the competitive and physical nature of the football.
From a team perspective, he can be a very important player in terms of ensuring the focus of the team stays strong.
If the club gets off to a difficult start in the Championship, it will be the responsibility of players like Shackell to ensure that heads don’t drop, keeping everyone moving in the same direction.
On a personal level he’s also facing a challenge in terms of making himself first choice in the defence, but he should have enough quality to hold down the role that Clement suggests.
