The medical services at FC Barcelona have announced via the official club website, that 24-year-old Douglas looks set to miss the start of the 2015-16 campaign, following an injury whilst playing against Chelsea.
Lasting just sixteen minutes of the encounter in Washington, the declarations from Barcelona state: "Douglas has suffered a hamstring injury in his right leg. He is expected to be out for around eight weeks."
Certainly a blow to the plans of manager Luis Enrique, who in comments via Spanish outlet AS, admitted: "I'm sad about the injury for Douglas." During his post-match press conference, already having an idea the news for the Brazilian player wasn't positive.
Douglas was a €4 million capture from Sao Paulo last summer in August, towards the end of the 2014 transfer window, penning a five-year deal with the Catalan giants.
He made his official Barça debut exactly a month later in La Liga, coming on as a substitute in the 0-0 draw at La Rosaleda against Malaga, on Sunday 24th September.
However, failing to impress sufficiently and also struggling with a variety of injuries, Douglas was third-choice throughout the course of the season, behind Dani Alves and Martin Montoya. Indeed, he only made one further appearance in La Liga, plus three in the Copa del Rey, although just two were in the starting-eleven.
Although Martin Montoya has departed Barcelona for Inter Milan, the signing of Aleix Vidal from Sevilla and the contract renewal of Dani Alves, means Dougles is set for limited action again during the 2015-16 campaign, which certainly won't be helped by further injury problems.
This has lead to speculation that Douglas may need to head elsewhere, if he's to enjoy regular games. At the end of June, a report from Mundo Deportivo suggested Sevilla were interested in a loan deal.
However, this was apparently blocked by Luis Enrique, who was concerned about having enough cover at right-back, given the sale of Martin Montoya and because Aleix Vidal can't play until January. Due to the FIFA ban, Barcelona are unable to register any of their signings until the start of 2016.
