According to Nantes-based newspaper Presse Ocean, Southampton were interested in signing midfielder Jordan Veretout - but he will sign for Aston Villa instead.
Southampton have lost the likes of Nathaniel Clyne, Toby Alderweireld and Morgan Schneiderlin this summer, but have spent carefully, with Cedric Soares, Jordy Clasie and Juanmi all arriving on the South Coast.
Manager Ronald Koeman will be keen to add even more new faces to his squad, and it seems that Nantes midfielder Veretout was one of his top targets.
Presse Ocean report that the Saints - along with Bournemouth - had been pursuing the 22-year-old midfielder, but they are set to miss out on his signature, with the report suggesting that Veretout will join Aston Villa instead.
Villa have already snapped up three players from Ligue 1 in Jordan Amavi, Idrissa Gueye and Jordan Ayew, and look set to make it four arrivals in Veretout.
Presse Ocean report that Veretout is on his way to Birmingham to finalise a deal with Aston Villa, becoming Tim Sherwood's latest signing - and a possible replacement for Fabian Delph.
Veretout can play in a host of roles in midfield, and could have been a sensible replacement for his compatriot Schneiderlin at Southampton - even though Koeman has just added the aforementioned Clasie to his squad.
At Villa, Veretout is likely to play in a diamond midfield alongside Gueye, and is another sign that Villa are keen to explore the French market rather than overpay for English players this summer.
Time will tell whether Veretout can succeed in English football, but with a number of clubs interested, there is certainly a belief that he can grow into a star in the Premier League.
