Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy told talkSPORT that he feels there are three midfielders at the club who will benefit from the arrival of Christian Benteke.
Murphy suggested that with the way he sees Liverpool’s central midfield setting up this season, Benteke will be a very important player at the top of the attack for a number of reasons.
Benteke is facing a real challenge to quickly get his teeth into life at Anfield where the pressure is arguably bigger than at his former club Aston Villa, with more matches for the Belgian to take part in over the course of the season.
“I think Benteke is a really good signing. If he stays fit then he’s a real handful,” he told talkSPORT.
“If you think about Liverpool this season wanting to play probably more of a 4-3-3 with Milner, Henderson and Emre Can in the midfield three, then you need someone leading the line who is powerful, can hold it up, bring others into play and is a goal threat and he’s all of those.”
Benteke the target man?
It will be interesting to see how Brendan Rodgers goes about utilising Benteke to get the very best out of him.
He does have the characteristics of a target man sort of player, but Liverpool are at their best when they dominate possession in wide areas and give their strikers something to attack rather than expecting them to hold up the play as pressure is released from the defence.
He does have the power to really back into opposition defences and bully them but it’s arguable that if Liverpool are using Benteke as a target man, they will be under a lot of pressure during big games.
