Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Danny Murphy told talkSPORT that when it comes to the club’s signings from the Gareth Bale money, he feels Nacer Chadli is the only player who has done well.
Murphy also suggested that Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino is faced with a situation where he can’t fully place his trust and faith in midfielder Erik Lamlea, ahead of a very important season for the football club.
“Only Chadli has done well – He’s (Lamela) shown glimpses but I don’t think you can trust him week in and week out, I think he’s a talent, maybe off the bench and he might get better,” he told talkSPORT.
A big season for Chadli
It’s a big season for Chadli because he needs to back up the glimpses of superb form he showed last season.
The Belgian needs to try and be consistent over an extended period of time, playing towards the left of Tottenham’s midfield which has been a problematic position for Pochettino in the past.
He was superb in some games last season, especially the North London derby away from White Hart Lane but the side needs to see that sort of performance more frequently.
The Lamela dilemma
It will be interesting to see what Pochettino does with Erik Lamela if he’s still a Tottenham player at the start of the season.
Portuguese paper Record claims he's on the verge of a loan move to Porto in Portugal and while the Argentine is a talented player, but has never shown it frequently enough in a Tottenham shirt.
He seems to struggle with the discipline needed to play down one of the wings but it’s difficult to see Pochettino moving him into any other position considering the proven options he’s already got centrally.
