Derby County have shown their ambition in the transfer market this summer, but re-signing Liverpool defender Andre Wisdom could be the last piece in the jigsaw for their promotion push.
The 22-year-old signed a new deal with Liverpool in the summer, as reported on club's official website, and had looked optimistic about breaking into the Reds first team despite the intense competition for places.
Wisdom, who can play both at centre back and right back, started Liverpool's first pre-season game against True Thai All Stars in a left back position but hasn't been in a starting line-up since.
New signings Nathaniel Clyne and Joe Gomez have largely been preferred in the full-back positions, and Alberto Moreno has since returned, which begs the question, what does next season have in store for the former England under-21 captain?
Why should Derby go all out for Wisdom, and how important could he be?
Wisdom would have been hopeful of getting a first-team spot at Liverpool earlier in the summer. However, the form of Gomez, along with Brendan Rodgers' persistence with playing him, has seriously cast doubt over his role at the club.
On the other hand, Derby are putting the finishing touches on a team that looks ready made for the Premier League ahead of this coming Championship season, but are arguably missing a key piece in defence.
Jason Shackell and Alex Pearce will seriously strengthen the heart of the defence, but the inconsistency of Cyrus Christie at right-back still leaves fans unconvinced their backline will be water tight.
Christie, who is a full Republic of Ireland international, has a lot of promise and has a lot to offer the club, but Wisdom's experience and defensive ability, which has already made him a favourite with Rams fans, could ensure the defence is among the best in the league.
The East Midlands club already look a very good bet for promotion to the Premier League next season, but the signing of Andre Wisdom would perhaps ensure they are the best equipped side in the league for it.
