Monaco’s in-demand defender Aymen Abdennour has given his biggest hint yet over his future destination, telling Spanish paper Diario Sport that he is ready to sign a deal with Barcelona.
The Tunisia international is currently one of the most in-demand centre-backs on the market this summer following a hugely impressive Ligue 1 campaign at the Stade Louis II.
Newcastle United and West Ham United are among a number of potential suitors, according to the Daily Mail, yet their chances of signing the 25-year-old decreased the moment Barca showed their hand.
Speaking to Spanish reporters on his future, Abdennour dealt a blow to the Premier League duo by ruling out a switch to a non-Champions League team and stating his intentions to move to the Nou Camp.
“I will only leave Monaco to play for a Champions League team. My president has told me he will only let me leave for a big club. If a club who wants me isn’t a big club, I will stay here,” he explained to Diario Sport.
On Barcelona’s reported interest, Abdennour added: “I would like to play for Barcelona but the decision isn’t mine, it is Monaco’s decision. I’m ready to play for Barca, the best club in the world.”
Do Barcelona actually need Aymen Abdennour?
Abdennour is undoubtedly one of the best centre-backs in France at the moment, but competition for places at Barcelona is high and their defence has plenty of depth in quality.
Last season, the club set new record for clean sheets and conceded just 21 La Liga goals, eight fewer than Atletico Madrid and a whopping 17 fewer than rivals Real Madrid.
