Payet has impressed in all of his pre-season appearances for the Hammers, after arriving as a new signing under new manager Slaven Bilic.
Oxford had the opportunity to play with Payet during the pre-season friendly against Charlton over the weekend and explained what he’s noticed about the way the Hammers are playing around the Frenchman.
“Dimitri was getting on it a lot - He [Payet] is good at getting on the half turn and getting it and turning it and creating chances,” he told whufc.com.
Encouraging signs from Payet
It’s encouraging that Payet is showing no signs of needing a settling in period, with some new players finding it difficult to adapt to English football in any form.
He appears to be very hungry to get his teeth stuck into the move and to make a positive impression for the Hammers in his midfield role.
The real test for Payet
It’s going to be a real test for Payet in terms of the Premier League, which will be a step up from anything he’s already experienced with the Hammers.
The first game against Arsenal in under two weeks will see him relentlessly hunted down by the Gunners midfield, if he starts, and he’s unlikely to enjoy half as much time and freedom on the ball.
In that sort of situation he has to adapt again and become a little bit quicker in terms of his decision making to ensure that the ball still goes into the right areas for West Ham’s attacking men.
