Sheffield Wednesday rebuffed in bid for Portuguese striker Joao

Sheffield Wednesday

HITC Sport understands Sheffield Wednesday have had a bid for Nacional striker Lucas Joao rejected.

HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club that Nacional have turned down a bid from Sheffield Wednesday for striker Lucas Joao rejected.

Wednesday have already raided Nacional to sign Marco Matias this summer, but they have been rebuffed in their attempts to sign his former striker partner Joao.

The Owls are understood to have tabled a bid of £2.4million for Joao, but Nacional are holding out for a higher fee.

The 21-year-old, who was born in Angola, joined Nacional in 2011, but he was farmed out on loan to SC Mirandela where he scored 12 goals in 27 games.

Joao scored six goals in 24 starts for Nacional last season and he is regarded as one for the future.

New Sheffield Wednesday head coach Carlos Carvalhal knows all about Joao due to his Portuguese connections and the club's scouting staff were alerted to Joao in their pursuit of Matias.

Carvalhal is in the market for a powerful forward this summer and Joao has emerged as Wednesday's top target as they look to pair the Portugal Under-21 international with Matias again.
