The former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder was in the starting line-up against Chelsea.
Indeed, while Zlatan Ibrahimovic wasn't stealing the limelight (as usual) by clashing with John Terry or even appearing to tell Stambouli himself to go away during his goal celebration, the Frenchman was the centre of attention for several Tottenham fans online.
The 24-year-old's time at White Hart Lane was simply a great enigma. On the one hand, plenty believe Mauricio Pochettino was mad to let him go after just one season when Spurs are now short in central midfield - unless they can attract a top-class addition between now and Deadline Day.
On the other, however, is the fact Stambouli flattered to deceive during most of the games he was given by his Tottenham boss.
And those two sides of the same coin were reflected in how Spurs fans perceived the Frenchman's start - and performance - on social media. Some are still fuming Stambouli was sold, others criticised his performance. Some, meanwhile, have developed a theory as to why the 24-year-old didn't succeed in north London. Here's a selection of the best Twitter reaction...
I'm actually mad Spurs let stambouli go— Fabio (@Fabooo22) July 25, 2015
Rabiot has been on the pitch 3mins & touched the ball more than Stambouli did in the entire 1st half. Puts himself about doesn't he.— michael (@officialMKcoys) July 26, 2015
I bet Stambouli preferred hugging Chiriches on our bench then hugging Ibrahimovic vs Chelsea.— Tottenham Talk (@tottenhamtalk1) July 25, 2015
