Southampton are keen on signing Ron Vlaar this summer, according to The Daily Star.
It has been reported by the British newspaper that the Premier League outfit are showing more than a passing interest in the defender who left Aston Villa at the end of the 2014-15 season.
Good signing for Southampton?
Vlaar is currently injured, which means that Southampton will unlikely sign him rightaway.
After all, the Saints will need the centre-back, who is a free agent at the moment, to undergo and pass a medical.
The Netherlands international knows the Premier League inside out, which means that he will not take any time in adapting to it.
The problem is that Vlaar was not in great form for Villa last season, and many will doubt whether he is going to enhance the quality of the current Southampton team.
Last season, the former AZ defender could make just 20 appearances in the Premier League, creating two chances in the process.
Vlaar had a pass accuracy of 82%, and won 25 headers, three dribbles and 11 tackles.
Given that the former Feyenoord defender is 30 years of age, there will also be concerns how that will affect his performance once he recovers.
However, the departure of Toby Alderweireld, who was on loan from Atletico Madrid last season, means that Southampton do need a centre-back, and Vlaar may be seen as a viable option.
