Report: Manchester United join race for John Stones, Everton eye possible part-exchange

John Stones

Manchester United have reportedly joined the race to sign Everton defender John Stones.

According to the Daily Mirror, Manchester United have joined the race to sign Everton centre back John Stones, with Chelsea still interested.

United have already splashed the cash on Matteo Darmian, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Morgan Schneiderlin and Memphis Depay this summer, but manager Louis van Gaal may want to bring in more new faces before the transfer deadline.

Centre back continues to be an area of concern for Red Devils fans, and reports now suggest that Van Gaal has his sights on a new target

The Mirror suggest that United have joined rivals Chelsea in the race to sign Everton defender John Stones, whose future at Goodison Park is up in the air.

The England international, 21, has been a revelation for the Toffees ever since his move from Barnsley in January 2013, but his impressive displays have now attracted interest.

However, the report also states that Everton would be interested in a possible part-exchange deal, with Tyler Blackett, Ashley Young and Javier Hernandez all targets for manager Roberto Martinez if United lodge a bid for Stones this summer.

Would Stones be a good signing for United?

The Red Devils already have a number of young English defenders in Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Luke Shaw, so the potential to add another may be appealing.

Stones is England's next great hope at centre back, and his reading of the game as well as his ability to bring the ball out from the back have seen him become a Premier League star in just over two years in the top flight.

He may not be the marquee signing like Sergio Ramos or Nicolas Otamendi, but Stones could become a fixture of the United back four for years to come - if they can convince Everton to sell.
