Liverpool fans react on Twitter to Emre Can's performance for the Under-21s

The Reds faithful were enthused that the German was playing in midfield.

Emre Can and Philippe Coutinho made a return to action for the Liverpool Under-21s on Sunday afternoon against Porto at Corby Town. Corby fans were surprised and delighted to see them. Reds fans, meanwhile, were similarly so.

Especially when it came to 21-year-old Can. The German played in defensive midfield for the Anfield outfit's young side and that enthused plenty of fans on Twitter ahead of the coming season.

There's plenty of debate around who should start in Liverpool's midfield next term. James Milner and Jordan Henderson are the leading candidates but are they good enough in a defensive capacity? Both offer non-stop engines but someone has to sit back and protect the back four.

Lucas is perfect in that regard but, again, questions remain over whether he can produce on a regular enough basis for the Reds. The Brazilian's abilities are also very limited when it comes to offering more than just your bog-standard enforcer. Joe Allen, meanwhile, shouldn't be anywhere near the first team - but probably will.

Could Can, then, be the perfect answer for Liverpool's midfield? Or will more predictable struggles within the back four mean the 21-year-old is required in the back line once again?

Here's how Liverpool fans reacted as Can delivered a measured performance, albeit for the the Under-21s, in his natural midfield position:
