Newcastle United drew 2-2 with Sheffield United in their latest pre-season friendly match this weekend, with summer signing Georginio Wijnaldum proving again that he knows where the goal is.
The 24-year-old Dutchman signed for £14.5million from PSV Eindhoven earlier this summer and he has already scored twice for the Magpies in pre-season.
Siem De Jong was also on the score-sheet for Steve McClaren’s side, which is great news for a player who was out injured for most of last season, but the duo’s goals were not enough to secure the victory.
Newcastle have signed Wijnaldum and Aleksandar Mitrovic this summer and a move for Chancel Mbemba should go through when the player’s work permit application is discussed by the FA on Thursday.
Wijnaldum scored 56 goals during his time at PSV and he has also netted on 25 occasions for Feyenoord, suggesting Newcastle have a new fan favourite and a game-changer on their hands.
After his latest goal, the attacking midfielder took to Twitter to send the following succinct message: “My second Newcastle goal” along with the hash-tag “Geordie”.
