Billy Sharp comments underline what was missing at Leeds United all along

As Billy Sharp praises new Sheffield United boss Nigel Adkins, it underlines what went wrong at Leeds United.

Striker Billy Sharp sealed his transfer to Sheffield United this weekend, after just one season at Leeds United.

The deal was confirmed via SkySports, as part of a double swoop to also bring in Connor Sammon.

Sharp sent a long message to Leeds fans expressing his disappointment at the way it worked out, via his Twitter page, and his enthusiasm to play for his new club.

As he prepares to link up with his former Scunthorpe and Southampton boss Nigel Adkins once again, Sharp underlined, somewhat unintentionally, where it went wrong at Leeds.

A key line in the post uploaded via his Twitter page read: "It's a pleasure to be back working with a manager who believes in me."

Fifth boss in 12 months

The big problem Sharp faced at Leeds was the change in coaching staff, and his face did not seem to fit under any of them.

Dave Hockaday was the boss who bought him, but he lasted just three Championship games before he was fired. Darko Milanic was next up, but he did not select Sharp to start a single game.

Neil Redfearn had the longest stint as manager, and gave Sharp opportunities, but not a real run in the side.

Sharp played 90 minutes just four times over the course of the season under Redfearn. While he got seven consecutive starts in March, he was often substituted, also saddled with a starting spot on the left wing, before being picked to start just two of the final seven games of the season.

All of this was with the backdrop of Steve Morison being first choice despite netting two goals all season. Redfearn wanted to believe in Sharp, but made it clear that the striker was not essential.

New boss Uwe Rosler clearly felt the same way, sanctioning his sale after buying his own striker, Chris Wood from Leicester City.

Adkins will not only just start Sharp, but he will also give him the confidence he needs to succeed. That seemed to be missing at Leeds, for if there was more belief in him, he could have still been representing the club.
