Report: West Ham United interested in Birkirkara hero Mauricio Mazzetti

The Argentine defender was the star for the Maltese club in their Europa League clash with The Hammers.

West Ham United have recently scraped through to the next stage of the Europa League courtesy of a penalty shoot-out victory against Maltese minnows Birkirkara.

The Malta Cup winners beat them 1-0 at home in the second leg to force extra-time, but could not force a victory.

Despite the presence of former Italian international Fabrizio Miccoli there is also no doubting who the minnow’s star player was. Argentine defender Mauricio Mazzetti was imperial in both legs, although received a red card in extra time of the final clash.

The 29-year-old defender does not have an illustrious career behind him. He has played in Argentina, Holland, Bolivia, Cyprus and even Iraq during his journeyman career but his performances against West Ham showed he is far more talented than his career to date. In fact, according to the Times of Malta, West Ham officials were thoroughly impressed with his performance.

In fact, the paper even claims that West Ham are in fact interested in the player.

They claim that West Ham informed Birkirkara president Adrian Delia of their positive feeling toward the Argentine, but that no bid was yet forthcoming.

Mazzetti caught the eye throughout the game with his stylish and confident defending, with West Ham right to be keeping tabs on his progress.

A deal would of course seem highly unlikely. It is rare for a player of this age to have slipped through the net for so long.

However, West Ham should not be afraid to offer the stalwart a trial and see if he can repeat his performances in the latter stages of pre-season.
