The Arsenal boss wants his side to score more from all areas but retain their defensive solidity at the same time.
Indeed, it was not a bad tally from the side as they were just two goals behind winners Chelsea, while Manchester City led the way on 83. Wenger though, is targeting more goals from all over the pitch, rather than the usual suspects of Alexis Sanchez and Olivier Giroud.
“What we want is some more goals from some players who are not really strikers and that was our strength traditionally,” he told arsenal.com.
“Our offensive and creative players scored 10 to 12 goals, that’s what you need. The goal scoring, the finishing, is a bit more psychic than any other activity in the team and when they go through a bad spell they leave their place for somebody else.”
Combine defensive efficiency with more goals
While he is keen for his side to start scoring more goals next season, the Frenchman insists they will not forego their defensive solidity to do so.
The Gunners only conceded 36 goals last season, the third best record in the league behind Chelsea and Southampton, with them only conceding 13 in 19 in the second part of last season.
And Wenger says he does not want his side to score 90 or 100 goals and miss out on the title because of defensive weakness. Instead, he wants combine defensive efficiency with 10 more goals.
“Our target is to improve our number of goals but you have examples of teams who have scored 90 or 100 goals and have not won the championship,” he added.
“We want to combine good defensive efficiency with 10 more goals. In the second part of last season we only conceded 13 goals in 19 games. So we want to keep that and add a few more goals. I think we can find that from inside.”
