The Hammers have been handed a potential boost in the race to sign German Denis, the Atalanta striker linked with the club earlier this week.

The 33-year-old Argentine hitman currently plays for the Serie A outfit, but as per a report in TMW, he could be up for sale at a budget price, with Atalanta needing money this summer.

They are looking to offload a number of players to raise valuable funds, and if the Hammers make a formal approach for Denis, they are expected to accept an offer.

Despite the potential boost in that boost in that race, the Hammers are expected to miss out on one target, with Lassana Diarra set to sign with Marseille.

The former Chelsea, Arsenal and Real Madrid midfielder trained with the club for much of last season, and came close to agreeing a deal last term. However, that fell through, and despite the Mail claiming last week that Slaven Bilic wanted a deal for him, L’Equipe claim he is set to sign with Ligue 1 side Marseille.

Stewart Downing has admitted that the appointment of Bilic was a key factor behind him leaving the Boleyn Ground this summer, having signed with Middlesbrough last week.

Speaking to the Daily Express, Downing said that if Sam Allardyce was still at the club, he would likely have tried to keep him, and would possibly have extended his contract.

He said: “The change of manager was a big factor. If Sam had stayed, then I'm sure he'd have had a good sit down to try to persuade me to stay. After speaking to Slaven, I didn't get that feel of someone who really wanted me there.”
