Report: West Ham United miss out on Thilo Kehrer to Inter Milan

The Germany under-19 international has headed to Italy from Schalke 04.

West Ham have reportedly missed out in their pursuit of a young German talent called Thilo Kehrer.

It is reported by talkSPORT that the former Schalke 04 youngster, who went AWOL from the German club earlier in the week, is set to join Italian giants Inter Milan instead at some point this week.

They claim that the 18-year-old was interesting West Ham, among many bog European clubs, ever since it became clear he no longer wanted to stay at Schalke.

He will apparently join for nothing as he is technically a free agent – although a compensation package is expected.

His agent Nils Schmaler has also weighed in on the matter, telling Gazzetta dello Sport that Schalke have no right to keep the player and that he has joined Inter Milan:

"Thilo is absolutely a free agent. The terms of extension to a minor over 3 years not apply, says FIFA. And Thilo not signed it, indeed, he informed Schalke in writing that he is free.

“He has chosen Inter, there is a signed agreement, and the Nerazzurri will act properly."

West Ham it seems, have missed out on a wanted commodity.

Why all the fuss?

Kehrer has caused quite a stink in Germany recently, so is he any good?

The teenager is the Schalke 04 under-19 captain and has been linked with Inter as long ago as January.

A Germany under-19 international, he is yet to make his professional debut, but still teams are playing tug-of-war over his future destination.

Kehrer is a top talent, a cultured defender that Germany hope will one day break into the senior side.

So West Ham fans can rightly feel aggrieved to have been pipped to the post by the Nerazzurri.
