"I'll come back stronger" - Southampton defender Florin Gardos reacts on Twitter after injury

Southampton defender Florin Gardos could be out for up to seven months.

Southampton coasted past Feyenoord in a pre-season friendly on Thursday, but it wasn't all good news for manager Ronald Koeman.

Goals from Graziano Pelle, Maya Yoshida and Juanmi handed the Saints a comfortable victory, but after the game, news broke of an injury to defender Florian Gardos.

The Romanian international had been hoping to push for a first team spot following the loss of Toby Alderweireld to Tottenham, but he now faces months out of action with a knee injury.

Manager Koeman told The Guardian after the win over Feyenoord that he will now look to bring in a new centre back, and discussed the 'sad news' of Gardos' injury.

"Very sad news," said Koeman. "He was going into his second season in Southampton and young, and that type of injury and you lose six or seven months and everybody is disappointed."

"That’s the priority, to bring in one or maximum two centre-backs. It’s too small with Maya [Yoshida] and Jose [Fonte]," he added.

Gardos has a long road to recovery ahead of him, but took to Twitter on Thursday night to proclaim that he will be back better than ever in a rousing message.

Who should Southampton target?

Having lost Alderweireld and now Gardos, Southampton are left really short at centre back, meaning Koeman must act quickly.

Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk would be an excellent signing to pair with the more experienced Jose Fonte, whilst Koeman would no doubt love to reunite with his former Feyenoord defenders Stefan de Vrij and Bruno Martins Indi - though whether Lazio and Porto would sell them is another matter.

Having replaced Nathaniel Clyne and Morgan Schneiderlin quickly and efficiently already this summer, fans will be confident that Koeman and co can bring in a new defender soon.
