Lanzini has linked up with the Hammers on loan for the coming Premier League season and Bilic has suggested that he’s good enough to play in a variety of positions at the top of West Ham’s midfield and in attack.
It will be interesting to see where Bilic utilises the player, especially considering the recent move for Dimitri Payet, who is also a forward thinking and naturally aggressive midfielder.
“Now in football you have deep playmakers like [Andrea] Pirlo, or [Luka] Modric, and then playmakers between the lines, [David] Silva and Payet, for example. He’s more that guy, he can play on the left, he can play all positions behind the striker,” Bilic told whufc.com.
Best place to play him
With Bilic mentioning Payet in the same bracket as Manchester City player David Silva, it may be the case that Lanzini starts to the left, if the boss wants to fit them both into the same team.
However, that’s a risk with someone like Lanzini because if he’s exposed slightly in a wider role, he will become a target for the opposition who will look to test him out in terms of his physique and how tough he is mentally over the course of an intense Premier League game.
If that’s a tactic which becomes obvious from the opposition, Bilic needs to try and get some extra protection to his new player.
That could come in the form of Aaron Cresswell, who could help him double up against certain players, or it could come in the form of the holding player, free to move into midfield areas where more support is needed.
