The dust has settled on the Serbian’s move to St James’ Park and while Howey suggests he doesn’t have a prolific record at international level, he’s confident that he can add an extra dimension to the Newcastle attack.
“He’s not been prolific for Serbia because I think he’s played 14 times and has only scored one, but apparently he’s very good in the air and he’s a good player. I think Steve knows what he’s about, he’s got his hand on the pulse and he knows all about him,” he told talkSPORT.
Give him time
Mitrovic is a very talented player but he’s someone who is going to need time to produce his best form for the Magpies.
The good news is that he does have the look of a player who is well suited to Premier League football in the respect that he’s got a big frame and as Howey alludes to; he’s good in the air.
Expectation and scrutiny at Newcastle is very high but it’s important that he’s given the support and backing of fans, especially if he gets off to a difficult start.
He’s joined a club where there is a real desire to grow and improve on the difficult past year.
Mitrovic is a player who can play effectively with his back to goal and he also gives the club an aerial threat.
He can look to make the difference in terms of bullying an opposition defence with set plays, but hopefully he will be given an initial chance to show off his sound touch and technique.
