The defender is a number of young stars at the Etihad who is pushing for a place next season.
The Citizens have embarked on a period of securing British youngsters this summer, with both Raheem Sterling and Patrick Roberts joining the clubs this summer and Enes Unal also joining.
There are also several youngsters that the clubs have developed who may be ready to be exposed to the first team football this year as well, with Manuel Pellegrini having used them in their pre-season games.
Lopes says it is important to have the youngsters challenging why he has also raved about the signing of the former Liverpool star.
“I’ve been watching his games for two years, he’s a great player,” he told mcfc.co.uk.
“I think he will bring something new to our team and he will improve here because he’s young. He’s a very good player. It’s good because [it means] there are more competitive positions in the team and that is good for the team going forward to get better.“
Important for the youngsters to get a chance
While it is unlikely many if any of Manchester City’s youngsters will break through, it is definitely important for them to be in and around the squad.
It is clear that the club are keen to develop youth of their own, as their main following the path set by Barcelona before them, with it likely they are working harder to meet the ever expanding homegrown quotas set upon them.
Not only that, it will help them move away from the big money spending they have done since their takeover and which is arguably not a sustainable set up in the long run.
