Could Cristiano Ronaldo be Manchester United's mystery striker?

Could Cristiano Ronaldo be set for a stunning return to Manchester United?

The Manchester Evening News report that the Red Devils are sensationally making efforts to re-sign the Portuguese international from Real Madrid.

Any deal for the superstar would eclipse the £59 million they paid for Angel di Maria last summer, and possibly even the £86 million Madrid paid for Gareth Bale.

Why United are reported to believe they have a chance

The Manchester Evening News claim there are two reasons United feel they have a chance to re-sign Ronaldo.

The first is his uneasy early relationship with new boss Rafa Benitez, with Ronaldo a big fan of his predecessor Carlo Ancelotti, who was dismissed just one season after winning the Champions League.

The second is Ronaldo's reported upset at friend Iker Casillas being sold to Porto, after years of service to the La Liga giants.

Why it won't happen

Real Madrid are unlikely to want to let their best player go, in a summer when they are yet to make an attacking marquee signing of their own.

If there is discord between Ronaldo and Benitez, Real would surely rather sack their new boss in order to keep the back-to-back Ballon d'Or winner happy.

If Ronaldo is unhappy with Iker Casillas' departure, one can only consider what the rest of the Real squad would think if he is sold, not to mention the impatient fan base who would place manager Benitez under potentially unbearable pressure.

It was just last summer Ronaldo renewed his contract, which currently runs until 2018.
