Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has told the club’s official website there are two main reasons he feels the club have made a good signing in the form of Christian Benteke.
The Belgian striker has now completed a move from Aston Villa and will form part of the Reds attack looking ahead to a very important season for the club, as Brendan Rodgers looks for the side to get back into the top four of the Premier League.
“He will work hard in training. He's got the physical presence, the ability to hold the ball up front and play with his back to goal,” Mignolet told liverpoolfc.com.
“He will make sure that all the other players we've got connect with him, and when he keeps that ball make sure that we can be dangerous on the counter-attack.”
Commanding physical presence
Liverpool arguably lacked a real commanding presence in attack last season at times when the club needed someone who could bully the opposition’s defence.
Benteke is someone who can play that role, with Rodgers potentially urging his players to push the opposition defence back, which creates space for other players to run deep from midfield into attacking positions.
The rea challenge for Rodgers id finding the right system, which gets the most out of the Belgian.
Benteke needs to show versatility in terms of the way he plays up front and needs to prove that he’s got different elements to his game.
Liverpool are a team at their best when they are controlling possession and moving the ball around the pitch quickly with some impressive pass and move football.
He needs to fit in with that and be able to sense when the side needs him to play that target man type of role when the team is under pressure.
