They were not the only side reported to be interested in him, with rivals Manchester United strongly linked.
The Sun had reported a week ago that United were 'closing in' on signing Benteke, with manager Louis van Gaal planning to activate his release clause.
The Red Devils did not push their interest as speculated, although they remain short of strikers in their squad, having sold Robin van Persie and decided not to re-sign Radamel Falcao, who has since joined Chelsea on loan.
Van Gaal has been mischievous this week, suggesting to The Times he is planning a big name striker signing, and will know having elected not to compete with Liverpool for Benteke, the bar has been set and he will need to bring in a player at least on a par with the big Belgian.
United beat Liverpool to the Champions League places last season, a role reversal from a year earlier, but the Anfield side have bought well this summer, with Benteke arguably their most important addition.
They have paid a lot of money for him at £32.5 million, but considering his solid record at Aston Villa, it could be a very worthwhile investment.
Emotions among United fans ranged from derision at paying so much, worrying about their own striker search, and simply hoping Benteke struggles.
Here is a look at what they had to say via Twitter...

IF #mufc wanted Benteke, he would be in San Jose with 2 pre-season games under his belt.— Mohammed Abdul (@Mohabdul_23) July 22, 2015
