Newcastle United youngster Jamaal Lascelles has described his mentality to the Shields Gazette in terms of his pre-season chance at the club.
The defender has been given a real opportunity to impress by Magpies boss Steve McClaren and he’s explained that he’s determined to make the most of it, with the return of the Premier League now just over two weeks away.
“I enjoy every minute. I’ve waited long enough to get the shirt on,” he told shieldsgazette.com.
“Now I finally have I’m really pleased. Every second that I play, I enjoy.”
An encouraging mentality
McClaren will be delighted with the mentality of the player because it doesn’t appear that he’s afraid to step forward and put his hand up for the cause.
McClaren may have harboured a slight worry when he became Newcastle manager that it would be difficult for him to motivate players, because of the way the club struggled over the second half of last season.
Lascelles embodies the sort of approach to pre-season and every Newcastle match, regardless of pressure or importance, which McClaren will want to see from all of his players.
Will he start the new season?
He’s giving himself every chance of starting in the Premier League but whether the boss will take that risk by including him into the team is doubtful.
Newcastle need to get off to a solid start this season, which makes it dangerous for McClaren to go with less experienced players.
Opposition sides will sense an opportunity to pile the pressure onto the Magpies and there is a chance that Lascelles could be affected mentally if the club gets off to a poor start.
