Tottenham fans debate the future of central defender Federico Fazio

Tottenham Hotspur fans have given their thoughts on the current importance of defender Federico Fazio

Tottenham Hotspur have already made some very good strides in the transfer market in terms of selling off squad players, freeing up wage space and creating the opportunity for manager Mauricio Pochettino to draft in some new players.

Etienne Capoue, Paulinho and Benjamin Stambouli are just a few examples of the players who have already been moved on and there’s likely to be further movement over the next few weeks.

One player who could be under a little bit of pressure is central defender Federico Fazio, who has a real challenge on his hands to improve his status at Tottenham following moves for Kevin Wimmer and Toby Alderweireld.

A selection of Tottenham fans to comment across the site have debated whether he still has a role to play at White Hart Lane.

Alex McMurray: I feel sorry for stambouli and fazio, they're both quite competent in their positions but they just don't fit into our systems

Joe Spur: Keep Fazio!

Jonesy: He (along with Fazio) was a poor acquisition and given more than enough chances

Disqus_EDbR6pf6Kd: Spurs do, however, have Vertonghen and Fazio, neither of which are bad ball-players and both can play higher up

Bob: Yes as although he wont be first or even second or third choice he will be very useful situations such as if we are winning and want to close a game out as his size and aerial ability will be useful

Best approach for Fazio?

If the player has aspirations to play on a weekly basis then he may have to consider a loan move away from the club.

If he stays, he’ll have to accept that he may not start the season in the first team and will need to fight his way into the side through taking his chances whether he’s coming off the bench in the Premier League to do a job or whether he’s starting in a lower profile competition.
