Stevie Frail highlights Celtic youngster Colin McCabe's contribution in pre-season friendly

Celtic Stands

The Celtic coach has been speaking about a youngster trying to stake a claim in a highly-competitive position.

Celtic under-20 coach Stevie Frail has been speaking to the club’s official website about the performance of young goalkeeper Colin McCabe in a recent friendly match against Raith Rovers.

Celtic took a young team to play the Scottish Championship side earlier this week and McCabe played a vital role in ensuring the score-line ended 1-1.

The 18-year-old has a long way to go to make an impact on the Celtic first-team, with manager Ronny Deila recently signing Logan Bailly to compete with number one Craig Gordon, while Leonardo Fasan will be seeking chances of his own in the years to come.

But McCabe certainly showed what he is capable of on Tuesday, pulling off some vital saves that earned recognition from Frail.

“It can be quiet at times for a Celtic ‘keeper throughout the game but then you’re called into action and the save he made (with) about 10 minutes to go was excellent," Frail told celticfc.net.

“His two or three after that, after the legs began to tire, will be great for his confidence as well.”

Celtic have a large number of promising young players on their books and it will be interesting to see how Deila and Frail develop them in the years to come.

McCabe will know he has years to go before he will be knocking on the manager’s door for a shot at the first-team but after his fine showing this week, he is certainly heading in the right direction.
