Report: Celtic rivalling Sunderland for Papy Djilobodji, Nantes will sell to highest bidder


Celtic and Sunderland are both looking to sign Nantes defender Papy Djilobodji.

Djilobodji currently players for Ligue 1 side FC Nantes, but the Scotsman has claimed that both Celtic and Sunderland are looking to sign him this summer.

A Senegalese centre-back, the 26-year-old looked set for a move to Celta Vigo last week - as per L’Equipe - but Nantes were unsatisfied by their financial offer, and would prefer to sell Djilobodji to the UK as they believe the fee they will receive will be larger.

Both Sunderland and Celtic are named in the article as looking to sign him, but there is no reference as to whether either club have yet to formalise their interest into a concrete bid for the defender.

Who is Papy Djilobodji?

Djilobodji is a 26-year-old centre-back, who has played in both Senegal and France throughout his professional career. He start with ASC Saloum, before signing for Senart-Moissy, and then moving to Nantes in 2010.

He has risen to prominence since then, with his physical play - he is 1.92m tall - showing off his abilities in the back-line. Also able to play as a holding midfielder, Djilobodji is well versed in the defensive side play, and has earned international recognition with Senegal, winning 12 caps since making his debut in 2013.
