According to the latest reports in the Uruguayan editorial La Republica, Aston Villa have tabled an €18 million bid [roughly £12.6 million] for Bordeaux striker Diego Rolan.
The Villans are all-but set to lose striker Christian Benteke to fellow Premier League side Liverpool and boss Tim Sherwood has a big job on his hands in finding a suitable alternative.
Rolan, a 5ft 9inch Uruguay international centre-forward, has already attracted Premier League interest this summer, with Talksport claiming a bid from Newcastle United was turned down last month.
Now, Aston Villa are seemingly trying their luck, with reports from Uruguay stating that a bid has been tabled as the West Midlands side seek some much-needed firepower.
“Aston Villa have now stepped up their interest with an €18 million bid [£12.6 million] for the Uruguayan international who recently participated in the Copa America,” La Republica state.
Would Diego Rolan be a good fit at Aston Villa?
Despite being of different stature to Benteke, Rolan is still a strong striker and is exceptionally good in the air for his size, scoring 15 Ligue 1 goals last season.
He is predominantly a centre-forward, but the Bordeaux top scorer is also capable of playing out wide, with 15 of his league appearances last season coming as a right forward.
At 22, Rolan has a big future ahead of him and would fit in well with Villa boss Tim Sherwood’s philosophy of buying young players and developing them accordingly.
While he may not prove to be a like-for-like replacement for Benteke, the former Defensor Sporting youngster has his own qualities and represents a fine alternative.
