The Gers lost 1-0 to Burnley in Glasgow, but there were plenty of positives for a club hoping to make big steps forward next season.
In what was a serious test against opposition that were only recently in the Premier League, the former Brentford manager put together a side that was made up of several new signings who would have surely had little opportunity to work on team chemistry.
Home debuts were given to as many as seven new players by Warburton and his assistant David Weir, with Wes Foderingham, James Tavernier, Rob Kiernan, Andy Halliday, Martyn Waghorn all starting at Ibrox for the first time. Midfielder Jason Holt was playing as a trialist before he officially joins, while Danny Wilson made his second debut since arriving from Hearts.
Scott Arfield scored the game's only goal as he curled the ball home on 34 minutes to give the visitors the victory, but the club's change in playing style under Warburton was noticeable to supporters, particularly in the first half.
Next up for Warburton is a Scottish Challenge Cup match against Hibs on Saturday.
Below is a selection of some comments relating to the match, with Gers fans largely impressed with the football their side was playing, despite what ended up being a 1-0 loss to the Clarets:
Crazy seeing a Rangers team playing the ball out from the back instead of hitting a target man (past 5 seasons). Warburton is the man— Aidan Walker (@aidan_nmw) July 21, 2015
Annoys me knowing the fact that some rangers fans won't be patient enough for the project that Weir & Warburton are trying to do!— Ian Girvan (@iangirvan5) July 21, 2015
pretty boring second half, 1-0 to Burnley in the end. Rangers a much improved side form last season, but need to sharpen up in front of goal— Tyrion Greyskull (@tgreysk) July 21, 2015
Thats the least amount of aimless long balls I have seen at Ibrox in a long time. Refreshing.— BMC Rangers Views (@BMCRangersRants) July 21, 2015
Watching this Rangers team here is a total breath of fresh air compared to the last 3-4 years! Exciting season ahead under Warburton & Weir!— Samuel Wilson (@SammyWilsonF1) July 21, 2015
