Arsene Wenger trying to land Barcelona’s Sergi Samper - report

Sergio Samper

Mundo Deportivo have claimed that the Arsenal boss will make his third attempt to sign the midfielder, who has been likened to Cesc Fabregas.

Mundo Deportivo claim that Arsene Wenger wants to sign Barcelona prodigy Sergi Samper this summer and is preparing a €12 million (£8.5m) bid.

The Gunners have a history of signing young players from the Camp Nou outfit, with Cesc Fabregas famously swapping the Catalan powerhouses for the North London club as a teenager.

With Hector Bellerin and Jon Toral following suit in trading Spain for England, the latest claim is that another Blaugrana starlet is in Wenger’s sights.

Mundo Deportivo claim that the French coach has unsuccessfully tried to sign the playmaker twice in the past and will test the European champions’ nerve again this summer with a comprehensive offer.

Samper, who has been likened to Fabregas due to his exquisite range of passing, has the likes of Andres Iniesta, Ivan Rakitic, Javier Mascherano and Sergi Roberto ahead of him in Luis Enrique’s pecking order.

The report claims that Wenger sees Samper as the long-term replacement for Mikel Arteta at the Emirates Stadium and is keen to bring the young Spanish star to North London this summer.

Samper is currently on a pre-season tour of North America with the Blaugrana, but where he will play his football next term still remains to be seen.
