Alex Pearce opens up after his first full 90 minutes as a Derby player

Derby County West Stand

Derby County defender Alex Pearce is in confident mood after the club's latest pre-season win.

Derby County defender Alex Pearce appeared in positive mood as he spoke to the club’s official website after completing his first 90 minutes with the club.

Pearce played the whole game as the Rams secured a 1-0 win over SV Meppen last night, as their preparations for the new Championship season continue at full pace.

It was a marked improvement on the display against Northampton last weekend, which would have pleased the club’s manager Paul Clement.

“It’s good to get my first 90 minutes under my belt; getting your fitness levels up is what pre-season is all about,” he told dcfc.co.uk.

“That aside, there was some very encouraging signs tonight. We are improving game by game and I felt we improved on the last game tonight.”

“We’ve got a very good group of players here, a good quality group of players and we all knew that we what produced on Saturday wasn’t what we needed to do.”

Winning mentality

Despite the different manner of the last two performances, it is now two wins in a row for Derby which breeds a winning mentality into the current squad.

That’s positive for Clement because it gets everyone confident and full of belief before the more serious competitive games start coming thick and fast for the side.

Clement’s job is made much easier if he doesn’t have to try and create a positive atmosphere, which naturally exists if a team is winning games.

Pearce’s challenge

Pearce’s challenge is to back up his first full 90 minutes with the team, with another solid display in the next game.

Consistency is very important for any player, especially one who is new at a club and playing across a backline which will be seriously tested over the coming months.
